home.with.bailey it’s fire season, which means my AQI app has been open more than my email lately. some days, the sky’s gone that hazy white that tells you it’s not actually clouds. before i do anything else in the morning, i uncover Newtie’s cage, check the air purifier filter, open the blinds, and adjust his room.
 bird respiratory systems are far more sensitive than ours. the same reason canaries were the original air quality warning system in mines. an aqi that’s just uncomfortable for you can be dangerous for them. 
 if birds are part of your household, wildfire risk isn’t a footnote when you’re buying here in temecula valley. it’s a real factor, the same way an HOA or a fire zone designation is. how tight the home seals. how the hvac is set up. how many ways out there are in case of emergency.
 california is where i live and work. i’m not going to pretend this away. i will say it’s manageable, with the right setup and the right property.

home.with.bailey The first thing I look at in a home for a bird owner isn’t a bird room. It’s actually the kitchen. Here’s why: the nonstick coating on most pans (PTFE / “Teflon”) releases fumes when overheated that are invisible, odorless, and fatal to birds… fast. We’re talking minutes. Self-cleaning ovens, some space heaters, and certain hair tools can do the same thing. So when a client has parrots, an open-concept kitchen that shares air with the whole house isn’t just a style choice anymore. It’s a question of how that air moves. And how well does the exhaust fan work to pull fumes and burning food out of the house? It doesn’t make a home a no! I love an open plan. It just changes what I’m looking for: ventilation, a range hood that actually vents outside, a layout where the bird’s space can get its own air.  i’m not a land use attorney, but i know the questions to bring to one before you write an offer. what’s actually permitted for animal-related uses. what the setback requirements are for accessory structures. whether an hoa restricts outdoor structures in ways the listing never mentions.
 then the practical stuff: sun and shade exposure, ground surface for drainage, water and power access near the build site and yes, the neighbor conversation about noise, which is uncomfortable but worth having early.
 if you’re searching for a property with aviary or sanctuary intentions, bring that to the first conversation with your agent. it changes everything about how we look. it’s why I’ve made it my speciality.
