I live in Boulder Creek, so I know these santa cruz mountain communities intimately. Here’s what you need to know;
BEN LOMOND has a bit more of a modern feel. It has a wider range of shops with a great yoga studio, amazing garden shop & nursery, larger grocery store, a few great restaurants, medical offices, cafe, a park and more right in the main hub. As BL is closer to incorporated areas like Santa Cruz and Scotts Valley, it’s a bit more popular.
BOULDER CREEK is quieter. Tighter-knit community. VERY cute downtown strip as well with a variety of shops but overall you have a deeper forest vibe with less commercial activity. It feels more remote even though it’s only minutes away. The community here is quite connected—everyone knows each other.
WHAT’S SIMILAR:
Commute times to Silicon Valley are nearly identical, while fire risk and mountain living realities are the same
Both have that magical redwood forest living & require well/septic, private roads, generator backup
PRICE DIFFERENCE: Used to be that Boulder Creek was more affordable. Not anymore. Both areas have heated up significantly, and prices are converging. It really now comes down the kind of property you are searching for.
Choose Ben Lomond if you want a bit more action and amenities within a closer distance.
Choose Boulder Creek if you want pure quiet and more remote feel.
Remember, there’s no right or wrong!
